Is Saddam Hussein Really That Bad A Guy?

I know he was a brutal dictator who ran Iraq with an iron fist. Hussein’s public executions, torture and absolute power did some good for Iraq. Hussein somehow kept the various religious groups from killing each other long enough to produce oil and engage in commerce. That’s a challenge the new government never be able to meet without resorting to Hussein’s brutality and absolute control methods.

I think we have to learn to accept that the people in that region of the world are just not civilized, reasonable or freedom loving. These folks just don’t think like we do and we demand that they become converts.

I’m not sure why we are in Iraq this time but it’s beginning to look like a failed Crusade to me. We will never win this battle unless we resort to the same kind of relentless brutality and killing that does not respect women, children and the elderly. If we are not there to win then it’s time to get out.

The first Gulf War was different, Hussein invaded Kuwait and we stepped in to help that sovereign nation fight off a bully. The bully retreated.

Now the violence, killing and torture in Iraq is beyond any and all efforts civilized countries are willing to utilize in order to gain control. The only thing Iraqis understand is mayhem and that’s something polite societies like ours will never use to gain needed control.

I have not been to an American election in many years where I did not have to hold my nose while I voted for the creeps on the ballot. I don’t see how Hussein smelled any better or much worse than many of our own leaders.

Above all else I support our brave soldiers!

Sorry to burst your asinine bubble, but Saddam Hussein really is a bad guy.

Your entire premise couldn't be more stupid. Saddam didn't "keep peace" so that the economy could flourish. He killed so he could make himself rich.

Hussein killed to stay in power so he could steal? That sounds like a lot of leaders in our world.

We must remember before you can really steal the mother load you must have peace and prosperity!

Hussein sound like our own politicians. Did they find any cash in his kitcher freezer too?

Hussein must be a Democrat!

Hussein is a war criminal and mass murderer and must be punished. You're argument seems to be that so what every Muslim in Iraq is just like him. They're all bad.

What's your solution, Kill them all? That sounds like the Final Solution. Maybe we need to pull out and nuke the entire area.

I guess Hitler wasn't so bad a guy either. He got Germany out of the depression. So he killed a few million here and there, still you could buy good German products, right?

Is your oil so precious that you will allow slavery and terror in the countries that provide the oil so you can drive your SUV and have all the air conditioners you want?

By the standards we live by Hussein is as bad as they get. I’m merely suggesting that that’s they way folks are in that part of the world and Hussein is no worse than any other leader in their land. With the continued barbaric violence going on long after Hussein was removed I ask what was gained. It seems less people died under Hussein’s watch.

Let me make this clear, I’M NO FAN OF SADDAM HUSSEIN. I’m no fan of his countrymen either.

I don't get the oil argument raised here...

"Hussein somehow kept the various religious groups from killing each other long enough to produce oil and engage in commerce. That’s a challenge the new government never be able to meet without resorting to Hussein’s brutality and absolute control methods."

So there is your oil. I guess you feel the use of brutality and absolute control methods is ok to get your oil. As long as it's in another country.

And a question..

"Now the violence, killing and torture in Iraq is beyond any and all efforts civilized countries are willing to utilize in order to gain control. The only thing Iraqis understand is mayhem and that’s something polite societies like ours will never use to gain needed control."

What if they tried these methods with us to gain control of us? What will we do? It's not a question of 'if', it's a question of when.

A typical pacifist response! No some cultures don't accept peaceful solutions to anything. That's what we are dealing with. Too many Muslims are way over the brink and will not accept less than killing every Westerner and every Jew.

This is not about oil, but our efforts to impose our standards and religious values on a bunch of savages that have radically different values than our own.

It’s much more about our unyielding support for Israel that treats Arabs worse than White, South Africa or we have ever treated Blacks since slavery ended. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to protect Israel, no matter what.

If Israel was not involved in this mix the Arabs would have never targeted the United States. It’s a heavy price we pay for our association for Israel.
