.45 ACP or 9mm? Heresy, Blasphemy… Or Simply Reality?

For decades I belonged to the Church of Saint John Browning and faithfully followed the teachings of Colonel Jeff Cooper. The sacred scripture was simple: carry a .45. The reason was equally simple. Big bullets make big holes. Big holes leak more than little holes. Physics has never shown much respect for advertising campaigns or Internet commandos.

The .45 ACP earned its reputation the old-fashioned way. It proved itself on battlefields and in dark alleys where losing meant going home in a body bag. Personally, I have never had any difficulty handling a .45. Its recoil doesn’t intimidate me, and I can fire controlled pairs quickly and accurately, even under stress.

So why am I beginning to favor the 9mm?

No, I haven’t swallowed the latest fairy tale about “miracle ammunition.” Every year some marketing genius announces that his newest hollow point has finally suspended the laws of physics. Apparently, every previous bullet suddenly became obsolete on Tuesday morning. Give me a break. There is no magic bullet. The only truly effective bullet is the one that lands exactly where it belongs.

Now comes the part that some .45 purists may not enjoy hearing. The enemy has adapted. Thirty or forty years ago, an armed citizen or police officer was most likely to encounter one criminal, maybe two. Today we see carjackings, home invasion crews, flash mob robberies, organized burglary teams, and violent street gangs operating in groups. These people travel in packs. They often carry semi-automatic pistols, rifles, and enough firepower to make Bonnie and Clyde look like amateur hour.

That changes everything. I would rather have seventeen or eighteen rounds of quality 9mm than eight rounds of righteous nostalgia. There, I said it. If you think caliber alone wins gunfights, you probably learned firearms from YouTube comments. The lighter recoil of the 9mm allows most shooters to recover faster between shots. Faster recovery means faster accurate hits, and faster accurate hits may mean the difference between going home and becoming another crime statistic when you’re facing multiple armed attackers.

Notice one important word: accurate. Misses have exactly the same stopping power whether they come from a .22 or a .500 Magnum. Every bullet that misses simply becomes evidence, and every one of those bullets carries legal, moral, and tactical consequences.

I’ve been in a shooting, and I can assure you that Hollywood gets almost everything wrong. There is no dramatic soundtrack, no slow-motion heroics, and no clever one-liners before the shooting starts. There is only fear. Your heart pounds so hard it feels like it’s trying to escape through your throat. Your hands suddenly develop ideas of their own. Your vision narrows, time seems to speed up and slow down simultaneously, and if your training isn’t deeply ingrained, panic can throw years of preparation straight out the window.

Fear itself is not the problem. Panic is.

Years ago I asked Medal of Honor recipient Joe Foss what made him so brave while shooting down Jap Zeros over the Pacific during World War II. He laughed and replied, “Brave? I was scared shitless! I used my fear to fight smarter. What other choice did I have?” That answer was worth more than a thousand hours on the firing range because Foss understood something every armed citizen should remember. Courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is making fear work for you instead of against you. Fear sharpens your senses. Panic destroys your judgment. There is an enormous difference.

So where do I stand today? I still love the .45 ACP, and I still believe it is one of the finest fighting cartridges ever designed. Colonel Cooper isn’t rolling over in his grave, but he also believed in thinking, adapting, and winning. The battlefield has changed. The criminal has changed. Our tactics should change with them.

Today, if someone asked me to recommend one defensive handgun for the average armed citizen, I would probably recommend a quality 9mm loaded with proven defensive ammunition. Not because it is more powerful. It isn’t. Not because of some mythical “death ray” bullet. Those don’t exist. I recommend it because it allows most people to shoot faster, more accurately, carry significantly more ammunition, and better cope with the ugly reality of facing multiple armed criminals.

In the end, the caliber stamped on the barrel is far less important than the gray matter between your ears. Train relentlessly. Think clearly. Control your fear. Fight intelligently. Whatever pistol you carry, remember this: the most dangerous weapon in the fight has never been the gun. It’s the determined person holding it.

I understand what you are saying but there are 45’s that are high in capacity. My edc is a Glock 30s. Maybe not the highest capacity but enough for what the average CCW person will encounter. Same size as G19 but a better bullet.

Oops. I forgot. The 30s is 10-1. 11 rounds of sweetness in a very concealable pistol.

A 40 Caliber Nightmare Is Caught On Tape.

So you’re confident that that .40 caliber S&W service round will keep you safe. Maybe you’ll have second thoughts after you see this video. One hot summer night in 1994 Tempe and Mesa Arizona police were involved in a pursuit with this suspect who ran into a stranger’s apartment to hide after being shot TWICE in the chest. He was shirtless and you can see the blood pumping out of those two wounds. What’s really frightening is just how agile this fellow is as he struts to the ambulance. If he was not handcuffed and had a knife or a gun, ask yourself if he could still hurt you, your partner or a hostage? If your jurisdiction demands that officers carry either the 9MM or the .40 Caliber S&W it’s time to show this video to your bosses and lobby to have the .45 ACP round authorized. The switch may well reduce the screaming by self-appointed community activists about how many rounds police had to use on a suspect. The really talented and courageous video journalist, Karen Ke...

The origin of the feature film, COME FRIDAY…

CLick On the pictures to see full size versions. Long ago there was a young lady I had the hots for in a big way (Yes, I know that hots is not a word). She was pretty, incredibly bright, and had some real elegance about her. She had a love for children and basic kindness that you don’t often see in someone her age. I met her parents and could understand she came from a much more stable home than mine. I was raised by a single, welfare mom and suddenly found myself way out-classed. For whatever reasons things did not workout they way I had hoped. Sadly for me, we went on our separate ways. From time to time I’d run into this lady in various places where our job had taken us. Whenever this happened my heart would skip a beat or two. I left my hometown Chicago, and moved to Arizona where I founded my detective agency. As a private eye and soon a TV news producer too, my career took me to the highest profile criminal events in Arizona and throughout the country. There’s no question that ...
