The Case of Karmelo Anthony

Let me begin by saying I do not care one bit about school rules, zero-tolerance policies, or any other feel-good regulations that tell decent people they are forbidden from carrying weapons and defending themselves. A concealed weapon carried for self-defense is exactly the right tool to deal with thugs, bullies, and wannabe tough guys who cannot keep their hands to themselves. The people who go around intimidating others deserve to encounter serious resistance, including resistance from someone who is armed and unwilling to be a victim. Karmelo Anthony has now been convicted and sentenced to 35 years in a Texas prison. The problem is that I still have more questions than answers. There is no video. There is no crystal-clear recording showing exactly what happened. We are left with witness testimony, and many of those witnesses may very well have been aligned with one side of the confrontation. What we do know is that a Black teenager was apparently being told by a group of White te...

Burke, Berk, and the Dirty Work of Real Celebrity Criminal Defense

Burke, Berk, and the Dirty Work of Real Celebrity Criminal Defense David Anthony Burke, better known as D4vd, is accused of killing teen runaway Celeste Rivas Hernandez and leaving her dismembered remains in the trunk of his impounded Tesla. Those allegations are monstrous. But as always, the public is being fed the version police and prosecutors want released, in the order they want it released, with all the usual chest-thumping about how overwhelming their case supposedly is. At this point, nobody outside the courtroom should pretend to know exactly what happened. What we do know is that the accusation alone creates a mountain of poison for the defense, and even the best lawyers in California do not wave a wand and make poison disappear. This case against Burke may still be bound for trial through a grand jury indictment, which would eliminate the need for a preliminary hearing altogether. In other words, prosecutors may decide they would rather do their heavy lifting behind close...

Where is Tommaso Cioni? Who is he?

Tommaso Cioni is Nancy Guthrie’s son-in-law. He is married to Annie Guthrie. By all accounts, he was reportedly the last known person to see Nancy alive. It has been reported that Tommaso and Annie had dinner with Nancy and then he drove her home. That detail alone places him squarely inside the timeline, whether anyone likes it or not. I looked into Tommaso’s background. Other than a minor speeding conviction in 2021, he appears to have a clean record. He has worked as a teacher with Basis Schools, Inc., which generally suggests a stable and respectable background. Public records reveal nothing substantial pointing to misconduct or any history of bad behavior. But then something strange happened. When the media storm hit, both Tommaso and Annie seemed determined to hide their faces. That was striking. Innocent people do not usually behave like fugitives from a camera lens. It looked like fear. It looked like shame. And yes, it looked like possible guilt. Law enforcement has repe...

The brutal legal road ahead for accused killer Nick Reiner

Nick Reiner’s name detonated into public consciousness overnight. Police allege he stabbed his parents, Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner, to death. Investigators say the forensic evidence is heavy and unavoidable, including substantial blood evidence was recovered. Attention quickly turned to who would defend a young man now facing the full weight of a California murder prosecution. Many were surprised when attorney, Alan Jackson appeared on his behalf.  Jackson is no rookie. He is a longtime criminal defense attorney and a former Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney. His résumé includes prosecuting one of the most notorious homicide cases in modern history: the Phil Spector trials. After an initial mistrial and a retrial, Spector was convicted of murdering actress Lana Clarkson. Despite defense claims involving suicide or negligent handling of Spector’s Colt revolver, Spector was sentenced to prison, where he later died. Alan Jackson does not come cheap. As of now, the...
